Sleepy Hollow: Short Story vs. Film Adaptation

In reading the short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and watching the film adaptation by Tim Burton, there are several differences in the main character, Icabod Crane.
  • Ichabod is religious in the story but not in the film (decidedly atheist)
  • Came to Sleepy Hollow as a school teacher in the story, in the film he is a detective and is for this reason sent to investigate the infamous murder streak happening in the town
  • First heard of the Headless Horseman through stories told by the fireside of neighbors in Sleepy Hollow
  • In the story there is no murder mystery allegedly the work of the Headless Horseman. He is merely part of a ghost story that the inhabitants of Sleepy Hollow tell each other. There was nothing mysterious happening before Ichabod arrived in Sleepy Hollow and he fled it after one encounter with the Horseman. The Ichabod of the film encountered the Horseman many times.
